Named after Stephen Decatur, a 19th century U.S. Naval hero, Decatur retains a strong connection to its history, while preparing for the future with managed growth and responsible development. The city features beautiful tree-lined streets, parks and playing fields, libraries, colleges, businesses, and friendly neighbors which make Decatur a wonderful place to spend some time. Decatur focuses on community activities, promotes volunteer action within the community, and even integrates sustainable living principles into its city's commissions goals and vision. 

Here you'll find a traditional small-town atmosphere-and the sophistication and excitement of a college town-along with the benefits of living in a major metropolitan area. The city is just minutes east of downtown Atlanta, a few miles west of Stone Mountain, and the MARTA rail station is right under the downtown square so getting to Decatur from the anywhere around Atlanta is a breeze. Start your visit at our walkable, historic downtown square at the intersection of Clairemont and Ponce de Leon Avenues. Decatur is a destination in itself for our critically acclaimed restaurants, and storefront boutiques. At night, music lovers head for the listening room at Eddie’s Attic where the Indigo Girls, Sugarland, Sean Mullins and John Mayer played in their early days and still drop by for surprise visits. Live music of all genres can be found at numerous other venues in downtown Decatur and Oakhurst Village just to the south.

The Decatur City School District is an independent public school system that serves all of the children and youth within the four square mile area of Decatur. Their students perform above the state and national averages on standardized tests at all grade levels. Each year City Schools of Decatur has ranked in the top ten districts in Georgia for SAT performance. In addition, Decatur High School has been named an AP Challenge and AP Merit School in Georgia (only 10 high schools in Georgia were honored in more than one category).
